Reflecting on our work for Vivienne Westwood

ANY EFFECTS’S WORLD FAMOUS JOB IS STILL RUNNING 40 YEARS LATER!

News of the sad passing of iconic fashion designer Vivienne Westwood in December was a shock to the fashion world. The memorial service on 16th February attend by many including Kate Moss reminded us of one of the first projects undertaken by the fledgling Any Effects in 1981.

Kate Moss was among the famous faces attending a memorial service for Dame Vivienne Westwood on Thursday 16th in London.

The clock has 13 hours and runs backwards at high speed. It has become an iconic feature at Worlds End section of the New Kings Road, Chelsea for more than 40 years. Daily, international tourists, can be seen taking photographs of the unique feature outside Vivienne’s “World’s End’ shop. The very place where Punk Rock was born!

Testament to Any Effects’ skill and attention to detail the clock has run non-stop for 42 incredible years.

Tom Harris said “It was a totally bespoke project. I wanted it to be accurately correct such that the minute hand was on 13 exactly when the hour hand was on the hour number. This required a 13 to 1 gearbox which being an odd number was not available anywhere. So I built my own gearbox with a selection of cogs and gears. It was a complicated engineering challenge to say the least! Even I am surprised it has run continuously for over 40 years!”

Amazingly there is also a smaller version inside the shop which again required a handmade mechanism.

ANY EFFECTS. When you need MORE than special!
